A softer way to do Songkran in Bangkok starts with realizing that not everyone wants to be in the middle of water guns, crowds, and chaos. Sometimes, you just want to stay dry, move slower, and still feel like you’re part of something. So here’s a version of Songkran that feels a little more calm and a little more intentional.

Growing up, Songkran felt like one of the best times to be Thai. Three to four days off, running around with water guns, and throwing water at literally anyone in sight. I remember getting splashed at gas stations while we were just trying to fill up the car, walking through Silom in full water fights, faces covered in powder. Even filling water guns with vodka to day drink with friends. And those foam parties at Narz that somehow left me with a fungal infection on my right pointer nail for a year.
Looking back, it was chaotic, a little unhinged, but honestly so fun. But now, we’re just not in that era anymore. These days, it’s less about chaos and more about choosing how you want to spend your time. Slower, softer, and a little more intentional.
So this year, instead of washing 2025 away, I’m resetting differently. Staying dry, moving gently, and choosing moments that feel a little more calm and a little more cute.
