Neighborhood find: A not-so detour in BKK

On the search for a cute brunch spot nearby, we decided to check out Detour in Pridi 14.

As my husband’s mom was heading off to visit her family for a bit, we thought it’d be nice to take her somewhere new. Detour had actually been saved on my Google Maps since last year, but we just never got around to it. Until now.

Of course, we did our usual scroll through the photos before going, and what sold us was the kaaprow. My husband’s mother loves this dish, and theirs looked like that classic old-school style; dark from sweet soy, dry but not too dry, with a perfectly fried egg on top.

We got there and the vibes were just it. It kind of felt like stepping into a big, cosy home with a green yard, perfect for dogs to run around (yes, it’s pet-friendly). Before sitting down, you order at the counter. We went for a minced pork kaaprow, extra spicy, and a breakfast plate with extra smoked salmon, along with the usual drinks, latte, coconut matcha, espresso, and some juices.

The Vibes

While we were waiting, I really took in the space. It’s very mid-century with lots of natural wood, soft browns, slightly faded tones, and little pockets of seating. What we also loved was their wine dispenser, one of those self-serve machines with multiple bottles to choose from, and the selection was surprisingly good at really reasonable pricing.

The Menu

When the food came, it delivered. The egg yolk was perfectly jammy, and the kaaprow had a proper kick. The breakfast plate was also excellent. Imagine crunchy yet soft toasted sourdough with just the right amount of butter, paired with velvet scrambled eggs. The sausage was long and skinny, with a nice fattiness that balanced well with the fresh side salad.

Pimmi’s Perspective

What I like about Detour is that it’s easy, familiar, and quietly well done. The kind of place you can come to for brunch, but also imagine yourself back at for a slow dinner, maybe a glass of wine from that dispenser, not really in a rush to leave.

And maybe that’s the point. Not every good place needs to be a destination. Some are just meant to be nearby, reliable, and exactly what you’re in the mood for without overthinking it.
